How many years in a row now have you given your mom that same standard bouquet of Gerbera daisies and carnations? Or another jeweled link for her customizable bracelet? Sure, she probably loves those gifts, but if you’ve given your mom the same gift year after year, it might be time to shake things up a bit and try something new. Instead of focusing on which gift will make Mom happiest, give your mother the gift of a fun experience this Mother’s Day!
Gifts Versus Experiences
You’ve probably heard over and over again that old aphorism “money can’t buy happiness.” Well, that’s certainly true to an extent. Just buying stuff is not the key to a happy life. However, that rule is a bit more flexible when it comes to money spent doing things with the people you care about. A study from San Francisco State University concluded that experiences, not things, is the key to a happier life. As the study explains, “the initial joy of acquiring a new object, such as a new car, fades over time as people become accustomed to seeing it every day, experts said. Experiences, on the other hand, continue to provide happiness through memories long after the event occurred.” So, basically, you can make yourself and your loved ones happier by sharing experiences rather than buying them things and, the more often you share enjoyable experiences, the more enjoyable you’ll feel your life is as a whole. With that in mind, it’s time to ditch the flowers and give mom a happy Mother’s Day experience instead – it’s the gift that keeps on giving!
When we talk about creating experiences, the idea isn’t necessarily to find the most thrilling, outrageous, or expensive things you can do in order for them to be effective. Instead, focus on what your loved ones enjoy. That may mean taking your dad out for a round of golf on a Saturday morning or spending an afternoon out boating with the family. Creating a happy experience that will linger in your mom’s memory can be as simple as treating her to a steakhouse dinner, just the two of you. Think about it for a moment – when is the last time you spent time with your mom without anyone else around as a distraction? A steak dinner is delicious, and it means quality time your mom will remember fondly if it means time spent with her baby (because, for as old as we get, we are always our mothers’ babies).
Plan a Day
Just because studies show you should focus on events rather than things, it doesn’t mean that you should never give gifts ever again. Give your mom that bouquet of Gerbera daisies, but let that be the start of a day spent with her! This Mother’s Day, plan a fun day out with your mom and include some of her favorite things, even if it means a couple hours building a jigsaw puzzle or strolling through the yarn store with her. Then, op everything off with a delicious steak dinner!
